Fitness for Duty, Drug and Alcohol Policy
v3.1
Purpose. This policy sets the standards of fitness for duty required of every crew member and shore worker, including alcohol and drug limits, fatigue and medical fitness.
1.Purpose
Operating vessels, mooring ships and working on the slipway are safety-critical tasks. A crew member affected by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or illness puts themselves, their crew and passengers at risk. This policy applies to every person working on company vessels and sites.
2.Alcohol and drugs
The blood alcohol limit for any person on duty is zero. Illicit drugs are prohibited. Prescription medicines that affect alertness must be declared to the master or supervisor before the shift. The company will conduct random, post-incident and reasonable-cause testing through an accredited provider.
3.Fatigue
Crew must not begin a shift without the minimum rest in the fatigue management plan. Masters must record hours of work and rest in the log and must stand down any crew member who reports being unfit through fatigue.
- Minimum 10 hours rest in any 24 hours
- Minimum 77 hours rest in any 7 days
- No more than 14 hours on duty in any 24 hours
4.Medical fitness
Crew must hold the medical certificate required for their certificate of competency and must report any change in health that affects their fitness for sea service.
5.Breaches
A person who returns a positive test or who is found unfit will be stood down immediately and the matter managed under the disciplinary procedure. Support through the employee assistance program will be offered.
6.Responsibilities
Masters and supervisors must apply this policy on every shift and must not allow an unfit person to work. The Crewing and Training Coordinator will keep medical and testing records confidential.
