The situation

What has happened

A 230 metre bulk carrier is arriving at berth 4 at 0430 on Wednesday with the pilot boarding at 0330. Berth 4 has mooring dolphins, so Bluewater Petrel will run the head and stern lines while the gang works the wharf bollards. Four days ago a heaving line monkey's fist struck a gang member's helmet at berth 2 and the company has changed the stand-off rule. Sione Tupou's medical has expired so he is wharf duties only. The berth is inside the port security zone and every gang member must display a valid identification card. Kirsty Anand wants the toolbox talk prepared, the gang and line boat ready on station 30 minutes early, and the job closed properly.

Your brief. Lead the mooring gang through the arrival: prepare and deliver the toolbox talk from the Mooring and Line Handling Procedure, confirm security access and fitness for duty of every gang member, run the mooring operation with clear radio communication, and close the job in the Job and Booking Register with the times and any near misses.

What to look for

Evidence guide

The toolbox talk must be specific to the ship, the berth and the dolphins and must include the new heaving line rule. Check that the student identified the crew member who cannot go on the line boat, that radio communication used standard terms, and that the job record has accurate times. Look for the student stopping work if the ship's crew departs from the plan.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
