Purpose. This plan sets out how the company responds to emergencies on its vessels, at the marina and fuel wharf and at the boatyard, and who does what in each type of emergency.

1.Activation

Any crew member who becomes aware of an emergency must raise the alarm on the vessel or site and contact the base. The master or the site supervisor takes charge at the scene. The General Manager or the Safety and Compliance Manager activates the shore emergency team, which coordinates external agencies, families and communications.

2.Fire on a vessel

Sound the alarm, muster the crew and passengers, close down ventilation and fuel, attack the fire with the appropriate extinguisher if safe, and prepare the liferaft. Alongside, evacuate passengers to the wharf and call the fire service. The master must account for every person.

3.Person overboard

Shout, throw a lifebuoy, point, and mark the position on the GPS. The master manoeuvres to recover the person using the recovery equipment while a lookout keeps them in sight. Broadcast a distress or urgency call if the person is not recovered immediately.

4.Flooding, grounding and collision

Sound the alarm, check for injuries, assess damage and watertight integrity, start pumps, and report to the base and coast radio. Prepare to abandon if the vessel cannot be saved. Do not refloat a grounded vessel until the hull has been assessed.

5.Marina fire and fuel spill

Raise the alarm, stop fuel transfer, evacuate the fuel wharf and nearby berths, use the wharf extinguishers and hose reels if safe, deploy the spill boom across the fuel wharf entrance, and call the fire service and port authority. The marina supervisor accounts for staff and visitors at the muster point.

6.Medical emergency

Provide first aid, contact the base and the ambulance service, and arrange evacuation by the fastest safe means. At sea, use the telemedical advice service through coast radio.

7.Drills and review

Every vessel must drill fire, person overboard and abandon ship at least monthly and record the drill in the log. The marina must drill fire and spill every quarter. The plan will be reviewed after every drill that reveals a weakness and after every real emergency.

  • Fire drill: monthly
  • Person overboard: monthly
  • Abandon ship: monthly
  • Marina fire and spill: quarterly
